Statistics: What exactly does Webalizer show and how are these values to be interpreted?

Webalizer is still the most popular programme for the graphical evaluation of the numbers of web server clicks (access_logs).

The “sites” (“processor”) column may cause some confusion which is often mixed up with the visitors (“visits”) – if the values are higher. Please see below the explanation what exactly is what, and first and foremost, what does it mean?

The visitors of a website are shown in the column “visits”. “Sites” shows the number of the various IP addresses on one day (or in a period of time). There is often only a slight difference, but in practice huge differences may occur.

Visits (visitors): Number of the various IP addresses which have accessed one or more pages within 30 minutes.

Sites (processor): Number of the various IP addresses which have requested something per day/month.

In practice this means: If I visit a website, I am counted as a Visit at first and then as a Site. As a Visit because I have requested a html page from my IP address, and as a Site because my IP address has not yet shown up on this day.

If I am going to look at another pages I am still be counted as the very same Visit and the same Site because nothing has changed here. The only change is that the number at “Pages”, “Hits” and "kBytes” has risen.

If I am now going to swap to another website and come back to the initial website only after 30 minutes (presetting), then I am counted as a new Visit. But: I am not counted as a new Site because my IP address had already been there once on this day.
